MATKUSTAJA
Elokuva saa alkunsa satunnaisesta kohtaamisesta: nuori tyttö, 11-vuotias, ja vanha mies istuvat vastakkain raitiiovaunussa. On kesäinen päivä Helsingissä.
Tytön huomio kiinnittyy miehen kädessä olevaan tatuointiin, numerosarjaan. Vanha mies huomaa se ja aloittaa keskustelun. Käy ilmi, että mies on selviytynyt Auschwitzin keskitysleiriltä, kuin myös Lodzin ghetosta.
Elokuvassa mies kertoo tarinaansa, ja nuori tyttö kertoo sitä myös, omalla tavallaan. Kuvausryhmä toimii tilanteen todistajana.
ALKU
Tyttäreni Maissi ja minä olimme Stockmannilla. Näimme vanhan miehen istumassa tuolilla. Maissi osoitti miestä, ja sanoi, että mies oli se jonka hän tapasi ratikassa. Mietin hetken menenkö juttelemaan, Maissin vastustuksesta huolimatta menin.
THE PASSENGER
The film begins with an accidental encounter between two people. An old man and a young girl of eleven are sitting on a tram, facing each other. It is a summer day in Helsinki, Finland.
The girl's attention is drawn to a tattoo on the man's arm, a faded series of numbers. He notices her gaze and strikes up a conversation. She learns that he is a survivor of the Auschwitz concentration camp and the Lodz Ghetto.
During the course of the film, he tells his story. She tells it, too, in her own way. The film crew is a silent witness to all this.
THE START
My daughter Maissi and I were leaving a department store when she pointed an elderly man to me, and said that he was the man she met on the tram recently. I pondered for a while whether or not to go to talk to him, and even though Maissi resisted, I did.
