Eilen unessa

Eilen unessa tapasin tulevan elokuvani lavastajan - näin hän kertoi minulle - vaikka en tuntenut tyyppiä ollenkaan. Ihmettelin itseäni, että miten minä jonkun noin vieraan, siis ihmisen josta en tiedä mitään, olen ottanut mukaan tuotantoon. Palaverikin oli alkamassa.

Unen ulkopuolisessa elämässä en tuolla lailla toimisi. Pidän työskentelystä tuttujen tyyppien kanssa, ja olenkin tehnyt suurimman osan elokuvistani noin 10 ihmisen kanssa. Minulla on työryhmänjäsenille kaksi ehdotonta kriteeriä: pitää olla hyvä ja kiva. Ei muuta. Se riittää.

Miksi aina samojen kanssa? Eikä minulla ole vaihtelunhalua? (Ei kauheasti.)

Tai eri leffoille erilaisia pyrkimyksiä jota uudet ammattilaiset paremmin toteuttaisivat? (Uskon hyviksi ja kivoiksi havaitsemieni monipuolisuuteen.) Vai pelkäänkö, että mikään ei vaihtamalla parane? (Ehdottomasti.)

Eniten kyse on kommunikaatiosta (kuten elokuvien tekemisessä noin yleisestikin), yhteisestä kielestä ja sen puhumisesta, tai ehkä halusta ymmärtää sitä.

Jos on olemassa ihmissuhde joka pitää riittävästi sisällään toisen ammattitaidon arvostamista, aktiivista kuuntelemista ja ajattelemista, itseohjautuvaa toimintaa ja naurua (ei valittamista), kuka hullu sitä mihinkään vaihtaisi.

Minä en ainakaan. Pitkät ihmissuhteet on elämän suola. Niissä ei tarvitse esittää mitään. Saa olla tyhmä, epävarma, polveileva, innosta tärisevä, paikallaan pysymätön ja kokeilunhaluinen. Ja kukaan ei ole moksiskaan kun kaikki tietää, että kyllä tästä jotain tulee. Tuli mieleen että entä jos filmiryhmä onkin analoginen ohjaajan ihmissuhteille?

Valmistelen parastaikaa uutta elokuvaani. Lyhäri kuvataan kesällä ja se on ensimmäinen ruotsinkielinen elokuvani - vähän hermostuttaa. Mutta vähemmän hermostuttaa kun mukana tuttua porukkaa kuten vaikka näyttelijä Milka Ahlroth (neljäs yhteinen homma) tai leikkaaja Antony Bentley, säveltäjä Timo Hietala ja äänisuunnittelija Janne Laine ( molemmilla myös kuudes yhteinen). Ei ihan perhettä, mutta melkein.

Yesterday I had a dream

Yesterday I had a dream where a person introduced herself to me as my set decorator. I was perplexed. I thought to myself: How I could have chosen a stranger, a person I know nothing about to be a member of my crew? I woke up even though a production meeting was pending.

Outside the world of dreams, as you might have guessed, that is not my modus operandi. I would never take on a person I know nothing about. And I really like working with the same people, and most of my 20 odd films I have made with, like, ten individuals. Yet I apply strict criteria for the people I work with: 1. One has to be good and 2. One has to be nice. And that’s it. It’s enough.

Why, you might ask, always with the same old same old, am I not adventurous? (Not really.) Don’t different films require different aspirations and therefore new people? (I believe in the versatility of the ones that I’ve found already to be good. And nice. ) Am I afraid of change? (I don’t believe the grass is always greener on the other side.)

I think it’s because of the communication (it’s what films are about, too): if it works, why fix it? It’s about an effort to speak and understand a language common to us.

If there is a relationship that includes enough reverence of skills, active listening and thinking, self-imposed action and hearty laughter (not whining), you need to be a crazy to let go of that.

And also, long relationships are the salt of the earth. One does not need to pretend. One can be dumb, insecure, rambling, trembling with excitement, eager to experiment. And no one minds, they know that something will come out of this.

I wonder, can there be some kind of analogy between a film crew and the director’s relationships?

I am currently preparing for my new short film. It will be shot next summer and it is my first one made in Swedish. That’s unnerving. But it is less so when there are loads of people I know around like actress Milka Ahlroth ( 4th production together) or sound designer Janne Laine (6th together ) or composer Timo Hietala or editor Antony Bentley (both 6th). Not my family, but almost.

So, as they say in Swedish: Uppåt oct framåt!
