EUFORIA

Perjantaina alkoi 29. Espoo Ciné -festivaali. Koska omakin leffani Levyt ja valokuvat oli mukana Ciné Kylässä, päätin osallistua enkä mennä mökille haravoimaan käsiä rakoille. (Mainio konsepti muuten, tuo Ciné Kylässä. Siinä ihmiset saavat tilata koteihinsa, työpaikoilleen, pihalleen tai autotalliinsa lyhytelokuvanäytöksen. Festivaali toimittaa projektorin, valkokankaan ja leffat.)

Lauantaina näin elokuvan nimeltä Euphoria, joka on ruotsalaisen näyttelijän Alicia Vikanderin tuotantoyhtiön Vikarious Filmsin ensimmäinen elokuva ja toisessa pääosassa on näyttelijä itse. Ohjaaja on Lisa Langseth. Elokuva ehkä tapahtuu Englannissa, ainakin englantia puhutaan.

Elokuva alkoi. Siinä kaksi sisarusta tapaavat pitkän ajan jälkeen. Ei kulu kuin hetki, kun ajattelen että nyt on jokin vialla… Mitä ihmettä, onko tämä kokonaan jälkiäänitetty? Jäin kuuntelemaan. Putosin elokuvasta.

Putoat jälkiäänityksen takia? Oikeasti? Ei ole mikään harvinaisuus, että elokuva vain apuäänitetään lokaatiossa ja apuääni korvataan myöhemmin tallennetuilla “puhtailla” repliikeillä. Sitä tehdään koko ajan. Mutta että siihen kiinnittää huomiota, mistä se kertoo? Jostain teknisestä kämmistä? Digitaalisten kopioiden aikakaudella? En usko. Ehkä äänisuunnittelusta? Siitä että valittu linja oli liiankin puhdas ympäröivän maailman äänistä eikä se kuulostanut mielestäni enää todelta? Tai ehkä olikin kyse jostain kuultavissa olevasta asiasta repliikkien ilmaisussa? Veikkaan viimeistä.

En tiedä johtuuko se dokumentaristitaustastani vai mistä, mutta arvostan alkuperäistä hetkeä, sen tuomaa läsnäoloa. Tämä ei tarkoita, että minun elokuvani olisivat epäaidoista hetkistä vapaita, valitettavasti. Välillä kuvaustilanteet ovat vain sellaisia, että ympäröivän maailman ääniä ei saa eliminoitua ja repliikki on pakko ottaa uusiksi studiossa. Mutta sen voin sanoa, muutaman fiktioelokuvan kokemuksella, että pidän suunnattomasti enemmän paikan päällä saaduista repliikeistä kuin myöhemmin paikatuista. Ilmaisu on erilaista kun näyttelee vastanäyttelijän kanssa ja suuntaa sanansa ihmiselle kuin jos näyttelijä puhuu itsekseen äänieristetyssä kopissa omaa kuvaa ruudulta katsellen ja hetkeä ja toista ihmistä mielessään tavoitellen.

Mutta, ehkä olin pudonnut elokuvasta jo aiemmin? Oliko jokin elokuvan näyttelemisessä, kuvauksessa tai rytmissä heivannut minut jo hieman sivuun? Ja jälkiäänitys oli se viimeinen naula arkkuun: en enää uskonut että elokuvan tunteet olivat tosia. Minulle ne olivat näyteltyjä. Minua ei mikään elokuvassa liikuttanut eikä riemastuttanut, en elänyt päähenkilöiden mukana. Edes ihana Charlotte Rampling ei saanut minua takaisin yhteiseen leikkiin, siihen jossa minä pimeässä tilassa samastun elämiin joita kankaalla näkyy.

Viereltäni kuului niiskutusta. Ehkä olinkin tunteettomuudessani ainoa, ja vieressäni itkettiin? Vai oliko hänellä kenties nuha? Mahdollista sekin.

Ja näin voi käydä; olin elokuvissa, mutta kuuntelin ääniä jotka tulivat ihmisestä vieressäni. Olin astunut vielä etäämmäs elokuvasta. Odotin vain että elokuva loppuisi. Ja olen pahoillani, jos huokailuni ja asennon vaihdoistani aiheutunut vaatteiden kahina piinasi lähelläni istuvia; niistä äänistä tuli heidän äänimaailmaansa. Paitsi jos he olivat Euforiassa, tunteineen - silloin he eivät kuulleet mitään.

Wikipedian mukaan “Euforia on sairaalloinen tai keinotekoisesti aikaansaatu hyvänolontunne”. Euforian vastakohta on dysforia. Ihan kiintoisa tila sekin, vaikkakaan ei se mitä tavoittelin.

EUPHORIA

On Friday started the 29.th Espoo Ciné Film Festival and because my (old) film Records and Photographs was part of, I decided not to go to the summer cottage and rake my hands to blisters but to participate with enthusiasm.

Yesterday I chose to see a film called Euphoria, it is the first release from Alicia Vikander’s new production company Vikarious Films. The actress herself plays a leading role. The film is directed by Lisa Langseth, and it happens maybe in England, at least everybody speaks English.

The film rolled. Two sisters meet after a long time. A short moment passed and I started to think there is something wrong… What, is the whole film dubbed? I listened. I dropped out of the film.

Dropped out, because of the dubbing? Really? It is no rarity that a film’s sound is recorded on location but later the lines will be replaced with “cleaner” ones. That is a standard practice. But if it draws your attention to it, what’s that about? A technical glitch? In this era of digital copies? I don’t think so. Maybe it is a sound design issue? The chosen style is too clean of the sounds that should surround the world it is depicting and it did not strike real to me? Or maybe it was something in the way they they were saying the lines? I’d put my money on the last one.

I don’t know if it is my background in documentary film or what, but I appreciate the moment of presence. This does not mean (unfortunately) that my films are free from artificial moments or badly acted lines. Sometimes while one shoots a film on location the situations are such that one can not eliminate the noise of the world and one is forced to redo the lines in a studio.

But, with my vast experience of making two fictional short films, I can say that I value much more on site-lines than the neat ones done later. When an actor directs his words to a person compared to when he is in a sound proof closet talking to his own image while trying to grasp a recollection of the situation past, the expression just is a tad different.

But maybe really I had dropped out even earlier? Something in the film; it’s acting, images or rhythm had thrown me out without me noticing it? The dubbing was just the final nail in the coffin: I just stopped believing that the feelings on the screen were real. They were acted, make- believe. Nothing moved me, nothing exhilarated me, not even Charlotte Rampling. I was not willing to play the collective game here where, in a darkened room with others, I’d live the feelings and thoughts of big people on the screen.

A person close to me was sobbing. Was she crying? Maybe I was the only one lacking of feeling? Or maybe she had an allergy and had to sniffle. That’s a possibility, too.

And this can happen; I was at the movies but listening to the sounds that the person near to me was making. Strange. I had stepped even further away from the film. I just wanted the film to end. I am very sorry if my sighing and the rustling of my clothes while I tried to find a position where I could sit tormented my fellow movie goers and disturbed their experience of the film. I took comfort in the idea that if they were into Euphoria, they did not hear a thing.

According to Wikipedia, “euphoria is an affective state in which a person experiences pleasure or excitement and intense feelings of well-being and happiness.”

It’s antonym is dysforia. That’s an interesting mental state, too. Not the one I pursued, though.
