Päähenkilöistä

Pari viikkoa minulle soitettiin tuntemattomasta numerosta. Vastasin nimelläni. “Et ikinä arvaa kuka täällä on”, sanoi miesääni. Hän oli oikeassa, en olisi arvannut.

Mies jatkoi: “Täällä on Reiska… Reijo.” Mieleeni nousi jotain, joku, jostain kaukaa. Reijo?! Tapasin Reijon vuonna 1992, kun tein lopputyötäni Taideteolliseen korkeakouluun. Hän oli pienen dokkarini päähenkilö ja enemmän taisin käyttää hänestä nimeä Reija. Dokkarini kertoi Reijan, transvestiitin, kauneuskäsityksistä.

Kun dokkari oli valmis, Reija näytti sen perheelleen kertoakseen transvestisuudestaan. Sen jälkeen en kuullut hänestä mitään. Paitsi nyt.

26 vuotta sitten noista asioista televisiossa puhuminen, ja vielä naamallaan, oli poikkeuksellisen rohkeaa. Löysin Reijon SETAn kautta. SETA kysyi häneltä, hän suostui tapaamiseen ja jossain myöhemmässä vaiheessa dokkariin.

Dokumenttielokuvan päähenkilön löytymiseen ei ole kaavaa, hän löytyy helposti tai vaikeasti, ankaran työn tuloksena tai sattumalta, läheltä tai kaukaa. Ikinä ei tiedä.

Kerran törmäsin tulevan elokuvani päähenkilöön kun kapakassa juhlimme leikkaajan kanssa leikkauksen valmistumista. Pöytään pärähti leikkaajan puolituttu joka osallistui keskusteluumme (jonkinlaiseksi harmiksemme) mutta täysin erityisellä pointilla, joka jäi minua vaivaamaan, ja yhtäkkiä olinkin kiinnostunut aiheesta, vein hanketta eteenpäin, tein suuren ennakkotutkimuksen löytääkseeni jonkun vastaavan henkilön - palatakseni siihen tyyppiin joka aloitti koko homman. Näin kävi kun tein dokkaria lestadiolaisuudesta; Sakke sai elokuvan Maailmassa aikaan.

Sittemmin olemme olleet paljon tekemisissä, ystävinä, tai leffaproggiksien kautta, ja olemme myös riitautuneet ja olleet pitkään olematta tekemisissä.

Mutta silti. Suhde elokuvieni päähenkilöön on ja pysyy. Side on muodostunut, eikä sitä voi katkaista. Mistä siinä on kyse?

Antamisesta? Päähenkilö päättää osallistua elämällään, ja ohjaaja pysyy ikuisesti kiitollisena? Ehkä.

Vai onko siinä kyse tunkeutumisesta? Ja sen aiheuttamasta epävarmuuden tunteesta? Ohjaaja saa luvan tunkeutua yksityisalueelle ja rakentaa siitä kertomuksen jonka kertoo kaikille. Katsojien reaktioita ei voi ennakoida - kuitenkin niiden kanssa päähenkilö elää loppuelämänsä.

Päähenkilön elämä muuttuu, ei pelkästään katsojien reaktioista, vaan myös sen takia että hän on avautunut asiasta joka on yksityinen, eikä paluuta siihen tilaan enää ole. Ohjaaja joutuu pelkäämään, että muuttaa päähenkilönsä elämän huonompaan suuntaan.

Noo, dokkarit tulevat ja menevät, ja vaipuvat unholaan. Eikö? Kuka niitä muistaa? Vastaus kuuluu: Ohjaaja ja päähenkilö.

Joten, Reijo soitti 26 vuoden jälkeen. Hän kertoi että hän oli parikymmentä vuotta elänyt ulkomailla eikä enää pukeutunut naiseksi. Mutta, hän sanoi, voisiko hän saada kopion dokkarista? Koska se on osa hänen historiaansa.

Olin iloinen. Sanoin: “Tottakai”.

Odotan innolla ensi perjantaita, tapaamme silloin.

About protagonists

A couple of weeks ago I got a call from un unknown number. I answered stating my name. “You’ll never guess who this is”, said a male voice. He was right, I would never have.

He continued: “This is Reiska… Reijo.” Something, someone sprang to mind from the past. Reijo?! Really? I had met him in 1992 when I was making my diploma work for the film school. He was the protagonist in my small documentary film, and I think I then used more the female form of his name, Reija. The documentary told about Reija’s, a transvestite’s, views on beauty.

When the small film was completed, Reija used it as a tool to tell his family about himself. After that I heard nothing about him. Until now.

The world was very different 26 years ago. To show and to talk about things like that in television and to do it with your own face was very uncommon and brave. I found Reija through SETA, an lgbtig human rights organization in Finland. They asked him, and we met, and later he said yes to filming.

There is no formula on how to find your documentary’s main character. It’s either easy or difficult, result of hard work or a coincidence, found near or very far. You never know.

Once I found the protagonist for my next film when we were celebrating in a bar the ending of the editing of my film. A guy, an acquaintance of the editor, sat to our table and participated in our discussion (to our nuisance) but he had such a point of view that it stuck to my mind and started to bother me, and I became interested in the subject and started to make research and travelled all over to find a perfect protagonist - just to return to the guy who started it all.

This happened when I made a documentary film on lestadianism - a strict religious sect within the Finnish Lutheran church. This guy, Sakke, set off the whole film.

Since the film, we’ve had a lot of contact as friends or through film projects, but we have also fallen out and not seen one another for a while.

But still, a relation to the main character will never cease to exist. There is a bond and it cannot be broken. Why? Why do I feel it is so? Maybe it is because it is about giving? The protagonist chooses to participate with his/her life and the director remains forever thankful? Maybe.

Or is it about intrusion? And the feeling of uncertainty that it causes? The director gets a permit to intrude to the private sector of a person and build a narrative and then distribute it. The reactions of the viewers are not easy to foresee, and yet the protagonist will live with them the rest of his/her life.

The main character’s life changes, not only because of the reactions of others but also because once he/she has opened up, there is no going back. The director is afraid that the protagonists life will change for the worse.

Well, the documentaries come and go and will be forgotten, don’t they? Who will remember them? The answer is: the director and the protagonist.

So, Reijo called me after 26 years. He told me that he had been living abroad and had not cross dressed since. But, he said, could he have a copy of the film? Because it was part of his history.

I was elated. I said: “Yes of course”.

I am looking forward to seeing him. Next Friday.
